A quanto pare i ragazzini di oggi non vedono l’ora di vedere il mondo! Ed anche la piccola Camilla, figlia di cari amici, è nata con dieci giorni di anticipo, fregandomi sul tempo. Sono riuscita a prepararle solo un paio di scarpine all’uncinetto accompagnate dal biglietto di benvenuta.

It’s incredible: babies today can’t wait to see the world! Also Camilla, the daughter of dear friends of us, is born ten days ahead of the schedule, finding me totally unprepared! I could just make a pair of crocheted booties and a greeting card.

Il modello delle scarpine lo potete recuperare nel numero 3 della rivista ‘Uncinetto facile facile’ della Fabbri-DMC: io ho solo modificato la parte anteriore lavorandola a punto tunisi invece che a punto alto, in modo da avere una base quadrettata per il ricamo a punto croce. Per motivi di copyright non posso postare la pagina, ma se qualche lettrice non italiana è interessata allo schema, scrivetemi in privato che provvederò a darvi maggiori informazioni.

For the white baby booties pattern, you can find it in ‘Uncinetto facile facile’, Fabbri-DMC, nr. 3. I only modified the front part by crocheting it with Tunisian stitch. As a result, I obtained the squared base where I made the cross stitched rose. I can not attach the pattern (copyright, you know), but if any of you not-Italian reader are interested, please write me an email and I can send you detailed instructions.

For the greeting card, I took inspiration (please recall that ‘copying’ is not included in my dictionary!) from a beautiful card presented in a stamp competition (unbelievably it was not awarded): you can find it in this gallery.

I can wait to see how much in advance my nephew Nicol will come out... it is better if I start crocheting now!

Melanzane alla menta/Mint eggplants

La ricetta che vi propongo oggi è una delle prime insegnatemi da mia mamma ed è davvero semplice e sfiziosa. Come la crema di tonno, quando offriamo questo antipasto agli amici non resta mai nulla nel piatto e in genere fanno a botte per avere l’ultimo boccone : )

Today, I introduce you one of the first recipes my mum taught me. It is an easy though delicious exotic recipe. As for the tuna cream, whenever we present this appetiser, our friends clean the dish and usually end up fighting for the last morsel : )

Non vi scrivo neppure l’elenco degli ingredienti (tanto è breve), ma passo subito al procedimento:

The list of the ingredients is so short that I do not even bother to writing it in clear. Let’s start with the procedure:

1. tagliate le melanzane in fette spesse 1 cm circa

1. rinse the eggplants and slice them 1 cm thick

2. cuocetele sulla griglia (o una piastra) per pochi minuti

2. grill them for few minutes

3. mettetele in un piatto e lasciatele raffreddare leggermente

3. let them cool a little bit on a large dish

4. tagliate ogni fetta in striscioline larghe all’incirca 1cm e ponetele nella ciotola con cui le porterete in tavola.

4. slice them in strips 1 cm thick and put them in the pot you will bring to the table.

5. pulite uno spicchio d’aglio e tagliatelo in 3 parti

5. clean a garlic clove and cut it in 3 parts

6. condite le melanzane con i pezzetti d’aglio, il sale, l’aceto (anche balsamico), l’olio e della menta fresca tagliata a striscioline (va bene anche secca, ma il massimo è usarla fresca). Mescolate bene e mettete tutto in frigorifero per almeno un'oretta.

6. flavour the eggplants adding the garlic together with salt, vinegar (even balsamic), oil, and little strips of fresh mint (you can use also dry mint, but fresh mint is really better). Mix everything and leave it in the fridge for an hour.

L’ideale è servire le melanzane con pane casereccio.

To make things best, serve the eggplant appetiser together with rustic bread.

Scatoline floreali/Daisy boxes

Ed ecco a gentile richiesta (vero Dani? : ) le foto delle scatoline floreali che ho preparato a mia volta per la giornata di domenica scorsa.

And by being kindly requested (is it right, Dani? : ) here are the pictures of the floral boxes I presented the last Sunday meeting.

Per realizzarle ho prima stampato il cartoncino con i timbri del set Papertrey (i miei preferiti per gli sfondi!).

In doing them I first printed the cardstock using the stamps from my favourite background set (Papertrey).

Poi ho tagliato la forma delle scatoline con la mia fida Cuttlebug e la fustella ‘box shaker’ della Sizzix. A parte ho tagliato due quadrati di acetato trasparente per creare la ‘finestra’ delle scatoline.

Next, I used my trusted Cuttlebug and the Sizzix ‘box shaker’ shape cutter to obtain the shapes of the boxes. I cut two squares of transparent acetate sheet to create the boxes’ ‘window’.

Con la spugnetta e il colore marrone ho sfumato i bordi e tutte le linee di piega, in modo da conferire un po’ di tridimensionalità.

I tinged the edges and the fold line by means of a sponge and brown colour; this gives three-dimensionality to the whole.

Con un’altra fustella della Sizzix ho tagliato dei fiori in scala di bianco-marroncino-marrone.

I cut six flowers in colour scale using a different Sizzix shape cutter: white-pale brown-brown.

Quindi ne ho sfumato i bordi richiamando il colore della scatolina su cui sarebbero state attaccati.

Then, I tinged the edges with the same tints chosen for the box cardstock (brown, pink and blue).

A questo punto non mi è rimasto che attaccare un po’ di biadesivo spessorato sul lato posteriore, evitando il centro.

At this point, I only had to attach a few pieces of two-dimensional biadhesive tape on the back side of each flowers, avoiding the centre.

Stratificando i 3 fiori, li ho attaccati sulla patelletta anteriore di ciascuna scatolina, completando il tutto con un bottone cucito nel centro.

After stratifying the three flowers, I attached them on the front of the boxes, and I finished the job sewing a button in the centre.

Volete conoscere il contenuto delle scatoline? Non delle leccornie zuccherine, ma delle spille dei fiori all’uncinetto!

Domenica con doni/Sunday presents

Domenica ho passato una piacevolissima giornata con due care amiche che non vedevo da tempo, e guardate con che doni meravigliosi sono tornata a casa! Il contenuto è sparito quasi subito (gnammy! : ), ma le scatoline le custodirò preziosamente.

Two days ago was a very pleasant sunday. I met two dear friends of mine I had not seen for a long time, and they brought me marvellous presents! Despite the content lasted just few seconds (yummy! : ), I can guarantee that the boxes will be preserved jealously.

In particolare sono rimasta colpita dall'apertura di quella col fiore: non è sensazionale?

The opening of the flower box struck me the most: isn't it sensational?

Nastrini/Ribbons

Tra i geni che ho ereditato da mia madre senza dubbio ci sono quelli per la mania compulsiva di conservare qualunque cosa, ‘che non si sa mai’, quindi non vi sto a descrivere in che condizioni è casa nostra... chi c’è stato sa bene di cosa parlo : )
Ed è per questo che ho fatto fruttare i neo-acquisti della fiera di Rimini: primo tra tutti un bel paio di scatole di plastica con divisori. Una è stata subito colonizzata dal marasma di nastrini che folleggiavano promiscui in un cassetto.

Within the pool of genes inherited from my mother, there is certainly one that gives me a compulsive mania to preserve everything ‘just in case’. I can’t tell you the state of our home... our visitors know what I mean : )
That’s why I made good use of the neo-buying I did at the Rimini fair: at top, a pair of transparent partitioned boxes. The ribbons that have been having promiscuous fun in a drawer since a long time, found their appropriate place in one of the sections.

I guess my daughter liked them better in the old way...

...ma io trovo che siano molto più comodi nel loro nuovo alloggiamento!

...but I feel myself more comfortable with the new arrangement!

Tempo di comunioni/Communion time

Nonostante il clima non sia del tutto convinto che siamo in primavera inoltrata, gli appuntamenti segnati sul calendario ci ricordano che siamo in maggio, mese di comunioni, cresime e matrimoni. E ovviamente... di stamping! Il post di oggi è dedicato ai segnalibri e ai segnaposto preparati per la comunione di Alice, una nostra giovane cara amica. Il progetto è semplice e pulito, nella migliore delle tradizioni.

Despite the weather doesn’t know it, we are in spring, and the notes on my calendar are more specific: it is May already! Hence, this is the communion, confirmation and wedding month. And obviously... it’s stamping time! This post is dedicated to bookmarks and place cards made for Alice, one of our youngest and dearest friend. The project is simple and clear, like in the best tradition.

Cappello a punta/Pixie hat

Non sono stata mai una fan delle cose troppo fru-fru, e se mia figlia indossa qualcosa di rosa o con paillette in genere è del tutto accidentale. Ad un vezzo però non rinuncia mai: uscire col cappellino in testa. In questa stagione di transizione da un inverno piovosissimo ad un’estate che si fa desiderare, le occorreva proprio un cappello che la riparasse dal vento ma senza essere troppo pesante. Così ho dato fondo ai piccoli avanzi di cotone e le ho fatto all’uncinetto questo cappuccio da folletto (anche se mio marito sostiene che assomiglia di più ad un preservativo... uomini: tzè!).

I have never liked sissy clothes and when my daughter dress in pink or with paillette, generally it is not planned. But there is something she can’t do without: wearing a hat. Especially this year, after a very rainy winter and with a summer that still delay, she really needed an hat that protected her ears in windy days without being too thick. So I collected all the cotton remains I had and I crocheted this pixie hat for her (despite my husband’s insistence that it is more similar to a condom... men: tzè!).

Purtroppo come fanno spesso le donne della mia famiglia, ho lavorato ad occhio, prendendo man mano la misura sulla capoccia di mia figlia, quindi non è per un motivo di riservatezza che non vi do le istruzioni, ma perchè non le ho scritte man mano! Prometto di farlo per il prossimo lavoro. Giusto come informazione generale, però, posso dirvi che ho lavorato a mezza maglia alta, distribuendo un numero regolare di aumenti fino ai due terzi dall’alto, per poi procedere diminuendo di 6-7 maglie a giro nell’ultimo terzo del cappello. Ultimissimi giri (parte marrone) senza aumenti né diminuzioni, rifinitura a punto gambero.

Like my family women often do, I worked by sight, taking measures on my daughter’s head during the crocheting. Hence, I cannot give you any tutorial just because I didn’t write them down when I was making it. I promise I’ll be more diligent in the next crochet project. Just to give you some general information, I worked half treble stitches and I gave out regular increments until I made the 2/3 of the hat. Then, I started decreasing 6-7 stitches every round in the last third. Making the final rounds (the brown stripe) I did add neither increments nor reductions. The yellow border is made by left handed stitch.

Timbri su Das/Stamping on Das

Con la scusa che sarebbero piaciuti alla mia piccola, nelle ultime fiere ho acquistato dei timbri carinissimi per bambini: il set della fattoria e quello marino di Aladine. Una volta a casa, avendo Agata solo due anni, in effetti non è che ci abbia prestato attenzione più di tanto. Allora ho deciso per un utilizzo alternativo: creare dei dischetti-gioco. Effettivamente adesso che ci gioca mi sento molto meno in colpa...

In one of the last fair I could not help buying a couple of really cute rubber stamps for children concealing them as gifts for my daughter. I am talking about Aladine farm set and sea set. At home, Agata went on loving her two-years-old toys without bothering about my precious stamps and I decided I could use them in a different way. I would make disc-toys she could love. And now that she plays with them I feel much better...

Ecco come realizzarli:

How-to:1. procurarsi una pasta sintetica (io ho usato il Das perchè asciuga all’aria ed è abbastanza economico)

1. get some synthetic mould (I used Das modelling clay, because it doesn’t need hot air to dry up and because it is cheap)2. stenderla con un mattarello (io ho usato quello del Didò : )

2. stretch it using a rolling pin (I used the Didò’s : )

3. tagliare dei dischetti con una formina o un bicchierino (potete usare la forma che preferite)

3. take a mould or a glass to cut out some discs (or any other shape you like)

4. stampare il timbro scelto esercitando una pressione uniforme (se pensate di farne dei ciondoli, questo è il momento giusto per forarli in cima)

4. print the stamp by exerting an equal pressure (if you are making pendants, make a little hole on the top now)

5. lasciare asciugare all’aria

5. let them dry

6. rifinire il bordo con la carta vetrata

6. smooth the edge using sand paper

7. colorare utilizzando le tempere o gli acrilici (non vi consiglio gli acquerelli, che vengono assorbiti subito dal das)

7. paint them by tempera or acrylics (Das absorbs wartercolours at a very fast rate, be aware!)

8. lasciare asciugare e laccare con una vernice lucida o opaca, a piacere (tenete conto che la vernice tende a scurire i colori, quindi state più leggeri quando dipingete i vostri dischetti)

8. let dry and enamel them by glossy or opaque varnish (consider that varnish tends to darken the original tint)

Eventualmente potete attaccare delle calamite o delle spille sul retro.

You can still put a magnet or a pin on the back of each disc and make them a fun for grownups.Buon divertimento!

Riciclo pasquale/Easter recycling

Finalmente la primavera è arrivata davvero! Almeno sembra crederci anche quest’ape bottinatrice sul mio Muscari armeniacum...

Finally spring has come! At least, this is what the honey bee on my Muscari armeniacum seems to believe...

Vi siete abbuffati di uova di cioccolato a Pasqua? Bene, allora avrete un sacco degli ovetti porta-sorprese che vi avanzano. Non ricordo più chi me lo ha insegnato anni fa, io ci faccio dei portagomitoli per poter lavorare ovunque senza correre il rischio che il filo si attorcigli dappertutto. Parlo soprattutto di quei gomitolini già cominciati o di filo riavvolto, che sono spesso ingestibili...

Have you eaten tons of chocolate eggs this Easter? Then there are plenty of surprise-eggs left on your tables. I don’t remember who taught me this trick many years ago, but I always use these plastic eggs to make yarn-holders to bring with me everywhere. This is a good trick if you’re dealing with half-used or rewind threads, otherwise almost unmanageable.

Vi basta prendere un ago appuntito piuttosto spesso, scaldare la punta sul fuoco e appoggiarlo in cima di un’estremità dell’ovetto fino a forare la plastica.

What you need is a sharpened needle, then you must heat the tip with fire and put it over the egg until the plastic is fused.

E il gioco è fatto: il vostro portagomitoli da borsetta è pronto!

Voilat! Your portable yarn-holder is ready!

Potete anche regalarlo alla suocera che non lavora a maglia o all’uncinetto per tenere lo spago per arrosti e farvi invitare a pranzo per verificare se funziona bene : )

You can also give it to your mother-in-law even if she doesn’t crochet or knit. She can use it to hold the roast string, and you can have a good reason to go to dinner and check if it works properly : )
