Pois embossati fai-da-te/Handmade embossed dots

Per rimanere in tema con l’ultimo post, oggi vi propongo un progetto per creare uno sfondo embossato a pois. Ho sempre snobbato questo motivo, ma guardando dei lavori in rete recentemente mi è venuto un certo languorino...

Following the trail of the last post, today I present you with instructions to make handmade embossing dots. I’ve learned to appreciate this pattern only recently, thanks to some cards projects I came across during my web surfing.

Ho utilizzato il solito cartoncino pesante (il fondo di un block-notes) e ho segnato la puntinatura usando un righello (questa è la parte più noiosa, ma se sotto il vostro cartoncino mettete un foglio a quadretti, segnare le intersezioni sarà più facile e veloce).

To drawn the dots on the usual card stock (this time the back of a notepad) I used a ruler (this can be really boring, but if you put a sheet of chequered paper underneath the card stock, drawing the intersection becomes easy).

Il passo successivo è stato quello di perforare il cartoncino: io ho usato una pinza perforatrice, ma vanno benissimo anche le rivettatrici. Nel primo caso riuscirete ad ottenere solo un bordo perforato, come me, nel secondo potrete ricoprire l’intera superficie.

Then I drilled the card stock using a single hole punch, but a riveter is fine too. With the former you make a dotted frame, while the latter will allow you to drill the whole surface.

A questo punto ho rifatto il mio ‘sandwich’ con la Cuttlebug (si veda foto post precedente):
- placca A
- placca B
- cartone con pois
- cartoncino da stampare
- silicone rubber
- altra placca B
- spessori vari

Ed ecco il cartoncino embossato! Naturalmente i pois non sono perfettamente equidistanti, però volete mettere la soddisfazione di aver creato da sole la mascherina?

Then I composed my Cuttlebug ‘sandwich’ again (see the previous post picture):
- plate A
- plate B
- dotted card stock
- white paper
- silicone rubber
- another plate B
- shims

And here is your embossed paper! I know, the dots are not perfectly distributed, but the satisfaction of this personal creation is worth the fatigue!

Per comporre il mio biglietto a tre flap ho dato una spugnata di giallo ai pois in rilievo e sui bordi dei diversi strati di cartoncino.

In the end, to make my three-flap card, I sponged the dots and the paper edge with a yellow ink pad.

Embossing fatto in casa/Handmade embossing

Vi piacerebbe dare tridimensionalità ai vostri soggetti stampati creando un bordo embossato a secco, ma non avete una fustella adatta? Poco male, se volete una cornice quadrata o rettangolare, non c’è niente di più facile! Soprattutto se avete a disposizione una Cuttlebug o una Big Shot e il tappetino di gomma relativo (il silicone rubber, per la precisione...). Certo, con le Nestabilities sarebbe un gioco da ragazzi, ma io non le ho in tutte le forme e così mi sono ingegnata : )

You wish you could add a three-dimensional effect to your printed works by creating an embossed frame but you do not possess a properly cutting/embossing die? If you like a regular geometrical shape (like square or rectangle) and you can put your hands on a Cuttlebug or a Big Shot machine with their silicone rubber, you can create your 3D effect easily! Of course, Nestabilities would make it a child’s play, but my poor collection of shapes forced me to find another way, and usually it is improvising that is the fun part : )

Per prima cosa mi sono procurata un cartone di un certo spessore (tipo scatola da scarpe, per intenderci), all’interno del quale ho ritagliato una finestra poco più grande del soggetto che volevo stampare (il mio consiglio è di preparare delle ‘finestre’ di diverse dimensioni, alcune rettangolari, altre quadrate, così che siano pronte all’uso in ogni momento).

First, I take a card stock (from a shoe box), and then I cut a window slightly bigger than my stamp subject (I strongly suggest you to cut more than one window in different size and shape; some squared, some rectangular, such that you can have them ready to use whenever you need).



Quindi ho ritagliato il pezzo di cartoncino su cui stampare, in modo da fargli coprire comodamente l’area con la finestra. L’ho appoggiato sul cartoncino e sopra ci ho messo il silicone rubber.

At this point, I cut a piece of white paper slightly bigger than the window and I put it onto the cardstock. Then, I add the silicone rubber.


In pratica ho fatto questo ‘sandwich’:
- placca A
- placca B
- cartone con finestra
- cartoncino da stampare
- silicone rubber
- altra placca B
- spessori vari

Ho fatto un po’ di prove aggiungendo e togliendo degli spessori, in modo da ottenere un embossing ben definito, ma senza far troppa fatica nel girare la manovella.

The final ‘sandwich’ is made of:
- plate A
- plate B
- card stock with the window
- white paper
- silicone rubber
- another plate B
- shims

In order to get the right embossing without forcing too much on the handle of the Cuttlebug a few tests on the number of shims to add to the silicone rubber is needed.


A questo punto il cartoncino embossato è pronto per essere rifilato e stampato!

Finally, the embossing card is ready to be trimmed and printed!

Carte decorate a mano 2.0/Handmade papers 2.0

Babbo Natale (o la Befana, se preferite), è passata un po’ in ritardo, il viaggio è stato lungo, fin dagli Stati Uniti... dalla California ad essere precisi... e finalmente posso divertirmi con il set Guide Lines 2 di Papertrey! (Grazie mille Massimo per il recapito a mano : )

Santa (or Saint Nicholas, if you like), passed by a bit in late this year; he started his journey from the United States... from California, precisely... but in the end everything went well and I can play with Papertrey Guide Lines 2! (Thanks a lot to Massimo for the handly delivery : )

Ecco qui un paio di pasticci che ho fatto nei giorni scorsi, la possibilità di combinazioni con questo set è davvero infinita... per non parlare poi del fatto che si può mixare con altri timbri (ad esempio come ho fatto per la carta più scura).

Here there are two little things I made in the last days. The possible combinations this set offer are nearly infinite... and you can also mix this set with other stamps (like I did in the darker sample).




Il soggetto floreale è diventato la copertina della mia agenda di quest’anno, mentre quello geometrico ha fatto da base per un biglietto di compleanno (timbro dal set Hot Botz di Stampendous). Si sa: è sempre difficile regalare un biglietto ad un uomo... dite che apprezzerà le rondelle vere usate sotto i brads?

The floral subject is now my 2010 notes cover, while the geometric background made a very good impression in a birthday card (robot stamp from Hot Botz set - Stampendous). You know how hard it is to find a good theme for a man’s card... do you think he liked that I put real flat washers under the brads?

Mani d'oro/Golden hands

Una signora esperta origamista che conoscevo tempo fa un giorno mi disse: ‘il lavoro fatto a mano non sempre viene apprezzato, perchè qualcuno pensa che sia una scusa per risparmiare’. Purtroppo per certe persone questo è vero, ma fortunatamente chi mi conosce bene sa che per me un dono fatto a mano ha un valore inestimabile. I protagonisti di questo nuovo post sono proprio due regali ricevuti per le feste natalizie.

One day an experienced origamist lady I met some time ago told me: ‘handmade works are not appreciated per se. Someone can even see it only as a way to save money’. She was right, there are people who think in that way, but who knows me well enough can see how much I love handmade gifts. Indeed, two of the gifts we received for Christmas are now the subjects of this post.

Il primo è un biglietto ricevuto da mio marito e opera della nostra cara amica Laura, che nella composizione dei biglietti è davvero portentosa! E mi piace un sacco la sua tecnica di acquarellatura spontanea...

The former is a card created by our dear friend Laura and dedicated to my husband (I amitt it, I'm getting jealous... : ). Laura is very good in matching cards and colours, and I love her spontaneous water painting!

Il secondo invece è opera di una zia (Antonietta) che ha tricottato questo poncho caldo per la nostra bimba di quasi due anni. Avrei voluto fotografarlo indosso a lei, ma appena ci ho provato si è data alla macchia...

The latter has been made by our aunt Antonietta: it is a worm wool poncho knitted for our (almost) 2yearsold daughter. I wish I could post a picture of her wearing it, but when I showed her the cloth, she disappeared...

Carta fai-da-te/Self-made paper

È tutta colpa di Daniela! È colpa sua se ho il trip delle carte decorate a mano! Ogni volta che mi mostra un nuovo set di timbri o una tecnica strabiliante la mia ape comincia a ballare la samba. Una delle ultime volte in cui ci siamo viste mi ha fatto vedere l’uso delle guide lines: la tecnica la conoscevo già grazie a questo bellissimo blog, ma vederla dal vivo è stato illuminante. Una volta tornata a casa, non dispondendo del costoso oltreoceanico set della Papertrey, ho cercato tra i timbri qualcosa che potesse farne le veci, ed ecco il biglietto che è venuto fuori...

It’s Dani’s fault! She is to blame for my passion for self-made decorated papers! Every time she shows me a new set of stamps, or an amazing stamping technique, my bee starts dancing the samba. One of the last time we met, she introduced me to the guide lines: I knew the technique yet, thanks to this wonderful blog, but watching it by real was inspiring. Once back home I looked for some stamps I could use instead of the expensive original set (Papertrey), and this is the result...

Per realizzare questa carta ho utilizzato un timbro a rombi impunturati (si tratta di un prototipo di Impronte d’Autore), che ho stampato su tutto il foglio usando il chalk Amber Clay.

To create this paper I used a stitched rhombus stamp (an Impronte d’Autore prototype), that I printed on the whole surface of the paper using the Amber Clay chalk pad.

Quindi con il Chocolate Impress ho stampato questo soggetto della PSX che ho ritrovato in casa e che non avevo mai utilizzato, cercando di centrare sempre lo stesso ‘incrocio’ di linee in maniera equidistante.

Then I printed this stamp found at home, which I had never used before, trying to match the same junctions of lines and to keep the subjects equally distant.

I set nati per questo scopo sono trasparenti, in modo da consentire di centrare il timbro perfettamente nel punto desiderato. Nel mio caso, per avere un’idea dell’ingombro del timbro, ho staccato la gomma dal legno e l’ho usata su un supporto di plexiglas mediante il tack’n peel (che è una pellicola trasparente biadesiva non permanente).

The original guide lines sets are transparent, so that you can centre the stamp perfectly in the place you want. To do something similar, I detached the rubber from the wood applying it to a plexiglas plate using tack’n peel (a transparent bi-adhesive non permanent sheet).

Scartabellando tra i set clear ho trovato questo fiorellino e l’ho stampato con il chalk Amber Clay come intermezzo al soggetto principale.

Looking through my clear sets I found this little flower. I decided to alternate this flower with the original subject using Amber Clay chalk pad to print it.

Una volta pronto il foglio si può tagliare il pezzetto della dimensione necessaria e spugnare i bordi con l’inchiostro (nel mio caso sempre il Chocolate), in modo da dargli un po’ di tridimensionalità.

Once the paper is set you can cut a piece and sponge the edges with ink (Impress Chocolate in this sample) adding a fancy three-dimensional effect.

Qui vedete un altro esempio in cui ho usato un timbro differente (un fiocco di neve PSX) e un’altra combinazione di colori (lo so, lo so... è un altro biglietto natalizio ritardatario, ma giuro che è l’ultimo! : )

Here you can see another card I created using a different stamp (PSX snowflake) and a different set of colours (I know, I know... it is another Christmas card, I swear this is the last one! : )

Ritardatari/Latecomers

Adesso che praticamente tutti hanno ricevuto i loro regali e biglietti natalizi, posso postare un paio di lavori dicembrini senza rischiare di rovinare la sorpresa a nessuno.

Il primo biglietto ha come protagonista la natività Blessed Family di Stampendous e lo sfondo è realizzato col clear stamp Elegant Swirls di Rhonna Farrer (Autumn Leaves) timbrato col tampone Chocolate (Impress). La scritta Joy è stampata con l’alfabeto clear Retro Alphabet (Stampendous) ed embossata con la polvere bianca. Infine l’impuntura bianca su fondo blu l’ho fatta a mano con la penna gel Uniball.

Now that everyone has already received gifts and Christmas cards, I won’t take the risk of spoiling a surprise introducing to you a couple of greetings cards I created in December. In making the former I used the Blessed Family (Stampendous) and the Rhonna Farrer’s clear stamp Elegant Swirls (Autumn Leaves) for the background. This, I printed with Chocolate pad (Impress). I composed the sentiment ‘Joy’ by using the clear Retro alphabet set (Stampendous) then embossing it with white powder. In the end, I freehand added white dots with a Uniball gel pen.

--> Un trucchetto per le meno esperte: per non perdere tempo ogni volta col righello per fare punti equidistanti, basta preparare un piccolo template sull’acetato (magari recuperato da una vecchia scatola).

A tricky for beginners: you can avoid loosing lots of time in measuring the space between dots with a ruler; prepare instead a transparent template using acetate sheets you can get recycling an old box-cover.

Per prima cosa si segnano i puntini col pennarello indelebile, in questo caso a mezzo centimetro di distanza l’uno dall’altro. Visto che l’acetato è trasparente, si può appoggiarlo sul tappetino da taglio e segnare i punti usando i quadretti stampati.

First, draw the dots using a permanent marker (I distanced of 0.5 cm). You can easily make use of the squares printed on the cutting pad to measure the distance between the dots.

Poi si bucano i puntini segnati usando un punteruolo o un ago da lana appuntito.

Then, pierce every dot by means of a punch or a wool needle.

Ed ecco pronti i forellini dove inserire la penna o la matita per poter disegnare velocemente le impunture (o anche il punteruolo stesso per creare un’impuntura vera, magari da utilizzare per una cucitura).

Now you have the holes where you can insert your pen or pencil so to draw easily the stitching (you can even use the punch itself and create a real sewing trace).

Per il secondo biglietto ho usato una carta riciclata molto particolare, dalla trama grossolana: faceva parte di un blocco che girava per casa da anni... L’ho trovata perfetta per l’effetto rustico di questo biglietto. Le renne sono Let's Play! (Penny Black), stampate in Chocolate (Impress), tampone che ho usato anche per il ricciolo di sfondo (ancora Elegant Swirls di Rhonna Farrer: si capisce che mi piace questo set? : )

In making the latter card, I used a very particular recycled paper, with rough pattern on it. It was part of a writing pad I found at home. Surprisingly, it gave the perfect rustic effect to this card. I printed the reindeer Let's Play! (Penny Black) with Chocolate (Impress), the same colour I used for the background swirl (isn’t it obvious that I love this stamp? : )

Come tocco finale ho dato qualche ‘colpo di luce’ al ricciolo con la penna gel bianca Uniball e una bella spolverata di neve alle renne usando il pennarello da embossing trasparente e la polvere da rilievo bianca. La porosità caratteristica di questa carta ha reso la copertura dell’embossing grossolana e imperfetta, rendendo ancora più naturale l’effetto neve.

Finally, I added some light spots to the swirl with Uniball gel pen and I dusted the reindeers with snow using the clear embossing mark and the white embossing powder.

Sposi di campagna

A differenza di mia figlia, che vive in simbiosi col suo coniglietto di peluche, io non ho un animale preferito, ma devo ammettere che ho un debole per i maiali della Penny Black. 'Pinky & Porky' è uno dei timbri che uso di più per comporre biglietti matrimoniali, dopo opportune modifiche.

Questo è il biglietto che ho realizzato recentemente per le nozze di amici. Come potete notare, ho reso molto meno femminile Pinky, privandola dell'aureola floreale e dotandola di un papillon.

Rural Spouses

Contrary to my daughter who lives in symbiosis with her bunny, I haven't a favourite pet. Nevertheless, I must admit that I have a weakness for Penny Black pigs. I often make use of 'Pinky & Porky' for wedding greetings, and I usually love to add a few changes to it.

I created this card for the wedding of two friends of mine. As you can see, I made Pinky less feminine, taking off her flourish halo and giving her a bow tie

Ecco il timbro originale. Qui di seguito troverete le istruzioni passo-passo per modificare la stampa utilizzando uno stamp-positioner.

This is the original 'Pinky & Porky' stamp. You can personalise it following this step-to-step list of tips. To begin, you need the stamp-positioner.

Per prima cosa invece di usare un tampone per inchiostrare il timbro, ho utilizzato un pennarello nero (nel mio caso da embossing, ma potete anche utilizzarne uno diverso se pensate di non usare le polveri da rilievo). Ho tralasciato i fiori sul cappello di Pinky e il fiocco di Porky.

First: I ink the stamp using a black marker (I make use of an embosser marker, but any marker will do as long as you're not planning to use the embossing powders). I deliberately choose not to ink the flowers on Pinky's hat and Porky's bow tie.

Quindi ho stampato l'immagine sul cartoncino bianco.

Then, I print the image on the white card.

Dopo aver ripulito il timbro, ho inchiostrato solo il fiocco di Porky sempre col pennarello nero.

After cleaning the stamp, I ink only Porky's ribbon using the marker.

Quindi ho allineato la elle di plexiglas dello stamp positioner con l’angolo in basso a sinistra della placca di plexiglas più grande e ho stampato sulla placca appoggiando il timbro a filo della elle di plexiglas (è più facile a vedersi che a dirsi! : )

Then, I align the plexiglas L module of the stamp-positioner with the upper left angle of the plexiglas plate and I print the bow tie on the plate keeping the stamp in line with the L module (it is much easer showing than explaining! : )

Qui vedete il fiocco stampato sul plexiglas (scusate il riflesso della luce!).

Here you can see the bow tie printed on the plexiglass plate (I apologise for the disturbing reflection!).

Il passo successivo è stato quello di posizionare il fiocco in trasparenza sul punto esatto dove avrei dovuto stamparlo, riallineando la elle di plexiglas.

The next step consists in positioning the bow tie exactly on the spot where I wish it to appear. To do that, I realign the plexiglas L module.

Poi ho inchiostrato nuovamente il fiocco del timbro e senza spostare la elle di plexiglas ho tolto la placca col fiocco e ho posizionato al suo posto il timbro, premendo per stampare il fiocco.

At this point I ink the bow tie once more and, taking care of not moving the L module, I replace the plexiglas plate with the bow tie stamp and I press to get the print.

Ed ecco Pinky dotato di un bel papillon! Infine ho aggiunto un filo di perle al collo di Porky e dopo aver fatto l’embossing con la polvere trasparente ho colorato coi pennarelli acquarellabili il disegno stampato, come sempre.

There it is: Pink has now a wonderful bow tie! The final steps consist in adding a pearl necklace around Porky's neck, embossing the image using clear powder, and painting with watercolour markers as usual.

Per comporre il biglietto ho usato la carta Pocket Full of Green (DCWV) e un nastro marrone impunturato che avevo in casa. La scritta ‘Love’ è realizzata con il pennarello gel bianco Uniball Signo. Cambiando il colore del cappello e del papillon di Pinky potete abbinare carte con motivi differenti e avere tantissime combinazioni possibili.

Making this wedding card I used the Pocket Full of Green paper (DCWV) and a brown ribbon I had at home. The word 'Love' has been written with a gel pen (Uniball Signo). By changing the colour of both the hat and the bow tie you can increase the chances to personalise the original print, as well as the number of card patterns that will match this stamp.

Meglio però conoscere prima i gusti degli sposi: se arrivate al matrimonio e notate che lei ha un abito tutto di taffetà incastonato di diamantini e con uno strascico lungo 2 metri forse lo stile di questo biglietto non è quello adatto per le nozze... ^___^

It is better to be aware of the spounses' taste before, though: the bride's taffetà dress decorated with little diamonds and enriched by a two meters long train, for instance, could suggest you that the style of this card was the wrong choice to make to impress the bride... ^___^

Post-umi/After-effects

Con i postumi dei festeggiamenti sfrenati che iniziano a farsi sentire, e con dei regali ancora parcheggiati sotto l'albero, ho deciso di postare un lavoro natalizio. Ispirandomi al biglietto vincitore di un recente concorso, ho realizzato quello che vedete per mio marito.

Suffering the after-effects of unbridled holiday parties, and with a few gifts still remaining unopened under the tree, I decided to post a Christmas card. It is a work inspired by a winner greeting card in a recent Italian competition.

I soggetti stampati fanno parte del set Snowy Short Stacks di Stampendous, mentre lo sfondo embossato a fiocchi di neve l’ho realizzato utilizzando il folder del Christmas Set della Sizzix e la mia inseparabile Cuttlebug, con una leggera sfumata di bianco (Fresh Snow Hybrid di Papertrey) per dare risalto ai fiocchi sul fondo blu.

I made it for my husband using the Stampendous Snowy Short Stacks Set and, with my trusty Cuttlebug, the Sizzix Christmas Set folder to make the snowflakes. Eventually I added a softly shade of white ink (the Papertrey Fresh Snow Hybrid).

Un nastro rosso a pois e la scritta augurale completano il tutto.

A red ribbon with white dots and greetings completes the scene.
