Having attended a 5-days fair in Milan, I found a deserted fridge waiting for me back home. To set things right, today I decided to make granny’s backed rise. At first sight, it seems a simple dish, but I can guarantee that it is really delicious!
Granny does everything by sight, so I cannot give you precise quantities, and you have to guess them looking at the picture.
RISO AL FORNO

- riso (un paio di manciate a testa)
- patate a dadini
- carote a dadini
- sedano a lunette
- passata di pomodoro
- formaggio grattugiato
- prezzemolo
- dado spezzettato
- olio
- sale
- pepe

BACKED RICE

- rice (2 handfull per head)
- potatoes cutted in small cubes
- carrots cutted in small cubes
- celery cutted in lunettes
- tomatoe coulis
- parmigiano
- parsley
- soupe cube in small pieces
- oil
- salt
- pepper

Once the ingredients are ready, put them together in a big backing-pan and mix very well (replace the soup cube with butter flakes if you prefer). Then cover all the ingredients with water.

Buon appetito!

Put in the oven at 180°-200° C. Wait until the water evaporates and a crispy crust appears on the rise surface. (it can take approximately half an hour, or little more).

Here I am, back from the fair at the ‘Magazzini del cotone’ (cotton warehouse) in Genoa, where I spent also a two-days vacation with my family.

We couldn’t help to visit the aquarium, where the sight of real sharks drove my daughter crazy. I prefer jellyfish : )

Although small, the fairy showed lots of potentials; it was plenty of courses of découpage, macramé, painting, scrap and other techniques. I could not resist and I took the bait myself, buying summer flavours of very fresh yarn... I still don’t know what to do with them, but I am sure I’ll find something soon!

Marmorizzazioni/Marbling

Have you ever used shaving foam and pigment ink refills to marble paper? If you haven’t done it yet, well it’s time you do it! It is a real fun that gives you original and absolute unique backgrounds.
This post is a taste of what I am going to teach in the advanced technique course I give in Milan. Usually, I make gaily-coloured marbling that I use as card backgrounds.
My only advise is this: do not let your husband catch you with your hands full of his shaving foam!

We love to amuse our friends by whetting their appetites with fancy and elaborated buffet dinners. Every time we do that, this tuna cream stands in the centre of the table and becomes the main attraction! I cannot remember a dinner without some of the guests requesting the recipe of this fishy delicacy... in other words: it is always a success!
The recipe I am posting here differs a little from the original – which I actually copied from one of the numerous cooking magazines my mother-in-law keeps in her dresser (be sure that I’ll never ever repeat this before witnesses! ^____^)

Ingredienti:

- 400 gr di tonno sott’olio (peso sgocciolato)
- 250 gr di ricotta
- 2 uova sode
- 50 gr di pistacchi salati sminuzzati
- 4 cucchiai di brandy (tipo Vecchia Romagna)
- sale, pepe

Ingredients:

- 400 gr of tuna in oil (height without oil)
- 250 gr of ricotta
- 2 boiled eggs
- 50 gr of chopped salted pistachios
- 4 spoon of brandy
- salt, pepper

The making process is really simple: you need to whip every ingredient (also using a minipimer), first tuna with ricotta, eggs and brandy (don’t worry, you’re not going to alcoholize your guests! They will just be able to taste it : ). At last, add the chopped pistachios, pepper and salt. Make it rest in the fridge for one hour before serving it. Its perfect partner is a handmade country loaf of bread.

I was well aware that my mother was dead skilful, after all I must have inherited my great talent from someone (including humility : D), but when she gave me this little dress that she sewed for her nephew, I found myself speechless. I attached a crocheted flower-pin on the front and dressed my baby for the usual Sunday family-tour.

But guess what! She recycled the velvet from an old skirt! And I love recycling... Unfortunately, she didn’t give me any paper pattern to post, because she use to sew by sight and drawn the outline on a plastic bag... I must convince her to give me sewing lessons someday, because I can hardly turn on the sewing machine she gave me years ago...

TANTISSIMI AUGURI MANU’!!! : D

As usual I’m in late! In order to avoid the late come delivery (in Australia), this year I turn to a greeting card post dedicated to my dear sister-in-law Manù. I know that it is not as receiving the real card from the careful hands of your beloved postman, but at least she can have a birthday card in time for a change. HAPPY BIRTHDAY MANU’!!! : D

Stamp from ‘Critter party’ set (Pennyblack). I made the edges using 2 pencil tied up together, and then I enhanced the draw using a violet marker.

Prima ricetta/First recipe

A dear friend of mine, who is fond of stamping like I am of football, complained about the mono thematic character of this blog... As a consequence, the today post is a recipe dedicated to Paola. The recipe is a gift a former friend of mine, Chiara, shared with me some years ago.

TORTINO AL RADICCHIO TREVIGIANO

- 2 cespi di radicchio trevigiano
- 1 rotolo di pasta sfoglia già pronta
- 250 g di ricotta
- 1 scamorza affumicata
- 1 spicchio d’aglio
- sale, pepe, peperoncino, olio

Servire caldo

RADICCHIO PIE

- 2 heads of radicchio
- 1 puff pastry sheet
- 250 gr. of ricotta
- 1 smoked scamorza
- 1 clove of garlic
- salt, pepper, chilli, olive oil

1. cut the radicchio in thin pieces, wash and cook them in a sauté pan where you fried some garlic with chilli (if you like it).
2. add salt and leave it in the uncovered pan. Wait until the water is evaporated and the radicchio is cool.
3. spread the sheet of pastry in a 24 diameter pie pan
4. cut the smoked scamorza in small cubes and blend it with the ricotta
5. create a layer of cheese in the pasry, add a layer of radicchio, then a layer of cheese on the top
6. add some pepper and close the edge of the pastry
7. leave the pie in the oven at 180° C for 30 minutes. To serve it hot

While the ricotta cheese sweetens the bitterness of the radicchio, it is the red hot chilli pepper that adds a spicy and delicious taste to the dish. Beware: radicchio has a very strong taste, if you don’t like it this is not your recipe...

Aspettando la primavera/Waiting for spring

Since I can’t stand this gloomy winter weather anymore, today I inaugurate a brand new subject in the hope that it will encourage spring to come quick: crocheted flower-pin.

For a smooth and fluffy result I use a mohair yarn. The label recommends hook nr. 1.5, but to obtain a ‘airy’ flower I prefer to use a nr. 2.5 hook instead. The work is also loose: the yarn must be flabby. For those of you with a tight hand, I suggest a bigger sized hook.

FIORE
Partite con 90 catenelle, poi proseguite così:
1° giro: 2 maglie alte doppie in ciascuna catenella (sostituite la prima maglia alta doppia con 4 catenelle) = 180 maglie

FLOWER
Foundation chain: 90 chains
Row 1: 2 double treble stitches into each chain (substitute the first double treble with 4 chains) = 180 stitches

2° giro: 2 maglie alte doppie in ciascuna delle prime 65 maglie (sostituite la prima maglia alta doppia con 4 catenelle); 2 maglie alte in ciascuna delle 2 maglie seguenti; 2 mezze maglie alte in ciascuna delle 2 maglie seguenti; 2 maglie basse in ciascuna delle 2 maglie seguenti; 1 maglia bassissima.

Row 2: 2 double treble stitches into each of the first 65 stitches (substitute the first double treble with 4 chains); 2 treble stitches into each of the 2 following stitches; 2 half treble stitches into each of 2 following stitches; 2 double crochet stitches into each of 2 following stitches; 1 slip stitch.

Tagliare il filo e chiudere il lavoro.

Fasten off yarn.

Wrap everything around to compose the blossom centre starting with the narrowest edge. Do this by sewing it on the back.

FOGLIA
Avviare 14 catenelle, poi proseguire in questo modo:
1° giro: 1 maglia bassa, 3 mezze maglie alte, 3 maglie alte, 2 mezze maglie alte, 2 maglie basse, 1 maglia bassissima.

LEAF
Foundation chain: 14 chains
Row 1: 1 double crochet, 3 half treble stitches, 3 treble stitches, 2 half treble stitches, 2 double crochet stitches, 1 slip stitch. Make 2 chains and do the return row.
Row 2: starting from the second stitch, do 1 slip stitch, 2 double crochet stitches, 2 half treble stitches, 3 treble stitches, 3 half treble stitches, 1 double crochet.
Row 3: make 1 slip stitch in each stitch, doing 1 chain on the tip.
Row 4: repeat row 3.

Make 2 leaves and sew them on the back of the flower.

Cucire una spilla fissandola sulle foglie.

Attach a pin on the leaves.

A proposito di S. Valentino/About S. Valentine

When my husband and I were engaged we never celebrated Valentine’s day; and we certainly don’t do it as a married couple. On the contrary, we care very much about our own special recurrences. As such, we regularly celebrate the anniversary of our marriage. It was not a long time ago, and I made a very romantic card for the occasion, so I guess I can legitimately post it as a Valentine for this month’s card major event.
The principal stamp is ‘Henry Mouse hugging Heart’ (Whiff of Joy: I love the Alison Acton’s carachters!); the lateral hearts come from an old PSX stamp (Large Heart Quilt) and I used an ATD paper (Born to be wild) and a dotted red-passion ribbon to complete the card!

Following the trail of the last post, today I present you with instructions to make handmade embossing dots. I’ve learned to appreciate this pattern only recently, thanks to some cards projects I came across during my web surfing.

To drawn the dots on the usual card stock (this time the back of a notepad) I used a ruler (this can be really boring, but if you put a sheet of chequered paper underneath the card stock, drawing the intersection becomes easy).

Then I drilled the card stock using a single hole punch, but a riveter is fine too. With the former you make a dotted frame, while the latter will allow you to drill the whole surface.

- placca A
- placca B
- cartone con pois
- cartoncino da stampare
- silicone rubber
- altra placca B
- spessori vari

Then I composed my Cuttlebug ‘sandwich’ again (see the previous post picture):
- plate A
- plate B
- dotted card stock
- white paper
- silicone rubber
- another plate B
- shims

And here is your embossed paper! I know, the dots are not perfectly distributed, but the satisfaction of this personal creation is worth the fatigue!

Timbri usati: 798-O (Impronte d’Autore), Guide Lines Two (Papertrey).

In the end, to make my three-flap card, I sponged the dots and the paper edge with a yellow ink pad.
Stamps employed: 798-O (Impronte d’Autore), Guide Lines Two (Papertrey).
