Un caro amico che soffre d’insonnia ha appena festeggiato il compleanno: quale soggetto migliore di un branco di pecore per il biglietto di auguri?

A few days ago it was the birthday of a dear friend of mine. For he has serious sleeping issues, I thought that the sheep could be the ideal subject for his birthday card.

L’idea mi è venuta da questo sito ricchissimo di automata favolosi: vi consiglio di dare un’occhiata ai vari modelli, perchè lasciano davvero senza parole.

This site plenty of wonderful automata gave me the inspiration: do have a look at all the models, they are amazing.

Il biglietto che ho realizzato è semplice nel meccanismo (lo stesso di questa card natalizia: anche se la conoscete già, date un’occhiata al vecchio post, gli ho dato una leggera ‘rinfrescata’...): si tratta di una rotella di carta con stampate 4 pecore, che ruota grazie ad un fermacampioni che fa da perno sul cartoncino blu.

This card has a very simple mechanism (the same of this Christmas card: even if you know it already, have a look of the old post, I added new photos...): there’s a paper wheel with 4 sheep that rotates on a brad pinched to the blue cardstock.

Il cartoncino verde prato attaccato sopra con il biadesivo spessorato lo rende totalmente invisibile.

I attached the green-grass cardstock using a sponged bi-adhesive that hides the brad completely.

Le pecorelle fanno parte di un set Aladine e sono state colorate coi pennarelli acquarellabili Impress, i numeri sono timbri del set clear ‘Retro Alphabet’ (Stampendous).

The sheep belong to a Aladine farm set and I watercoloured them using Impress marks; the numbers belong to a Stampendous clear set (‘Retro Alphabet’).

Le stelle e i riflessi dei fruttini rossi sono realizzati con la penna gel bianca ‘uni-ball Signo’.

I made the stars and the reflection on the little red fruits with the white gel pen ‘uni-ball Signo’.


È stato solo lungo da realizzare, ma anche molto divertente.

Il trucco del ghiaccio/The ice trick

Siete in partenza per le vacanze e avete paura che il freezer si sbrini mentre siete via? Tranquilli, non siete costretti a mangiare il cotechino con le lenticchie e a propinare il minestrone di legumi ai vostri ospiti in pieno agosto! Basta un piccolo trucchetto per capire al vostro ritorno se è andata via la corrente compromettendo i cibi surgelati oppure se potete rimpinzarvi di Häagen-Dazs senza rischiare il mal di pancia! (e se non sapete cos’è l’Häagen-Dazs andate subito al supermercato a procurarvene una pinta: non potete vivere senza Macadamia e Belgian Chocolate!).

Going on holiday are you afraid that your freezer could defrost making a mess of your kitchen? Don’t worry, there are alternatives to devour the whole turkey you’re saving for thanksgiving! Here’s a little trick to detect if your food underwent a dramatic change of state due to a loss of electric power!

Allora, il trucco è semplice: congelate dei cubetti di ghiaccio e una volta pronti toglieteli dalle formine e metteteli in un sacchetto trasparente per alimenti o in una ciotola, quindi mettete la ciotola nel freezer. È tutto qui: il gioco è fatto!

The trick is simple: make a bunch of ice cubes, remove them from the mould, and put them in a transparent bag or a cup. Then put the cup in the freezer. That’s it!

Se al vostro ritorno aprendo il freezer troverete i cubetti intatti, allora potete star sicuri che la vostra salute intestinale non è a repentaglio; viceversa, se al posto dei cubetti trovate un blocco di ghiaccio informe, beh... meglio buttare via tutto!

When you come back, if you still see the cubes in the freezer you can be sure that your food is good. Otherwise, if you find a shapeless ice block, well... you better toss everything in the bin!

Top: seconda puntata/Top: second part

Forse qualcuna di voi si starà chiedendo che fine ha fatto la lavorazione del top che ho iniziato al mare... tranquille: tutto procede! Un po’ a rilento, ma procede.

Some of you could wonder about the crochet top I started on the beach, I guess... don’t worry: I’m working! Not so fast, but I’m working.

Però ho già apportato due modifiche al progetto: la prima è l’aggiunta di un bordino bianco al quadratino, che mi sembra lo rifinisca meglio. La seconda è la trasformazione del top in una maglietta con le maniche, visto che ormai non fa più così caldo e di sicuro non la finirò a brevissimo : )

I made some changes to the original plan, though: I add a white border on each square, and I changed the top in a t-shirt with sleeves, for I am sure that I won’t be able to finish it before the end of the summer : )

Intanto ho iniziato ad attaccare i quadratini in file da dieci: per ora ho 4 file, a occhio me ne serviranno altre 2 per completare il corpetto.

In the meantime, I started to attach the squares in rows: now I have 4 rows of 10 squares. I guess I’ll need another 2 rows to finish the trunk.

Fiocco rosa/Pink ribbon

Un altro fiocco rosa!
Sembra proprio che l’inverno abbia portato frutti dolcissimi : )
Questa volta il biglietto è per Sara, la bimba di una delle ragazze del gruppo di uncinetto cui sono iscritta da anni (anche se partecipo meno di quel che vorrei, lo devo ammettere...).

This time the card is for Sara, the newborn of one of the girl from a crocheting group I subscribed to (I’m an old member, but I must admit I do not participate as much as I wish...)

Per realizzarlo ho usato il modello ‘Easel card’, mi ha sempre incuriosita, ma non l’avevo mai provato. È semplicissimo da fare ed è molto particolare nel risultato, di sicuro non la solita forma di biglietto... è stato senz’altro più laborioso fare la busta su misura.

I used the Easel model that has always tickled my fantasy; it’s very simple to apply, and gives very special results. Definitely not a traditional greeting card. The hand-made envelope required much more labour...

Vacanze!/Holidays!

Sono al mareeeeee!! Ve lo dicevo io che i quaderni col veliero mi avevano fatto venire voglia di spiaggia ^___^

Però anche in vacanza non resto con le mani in mano: sotto l’ombrellone l’uncinetto è comodissimo, tra una polpetta di sabbia e l’altra : )

Sto preparando dei quadratini per fare una canottierina alla mia piccola. Mio marito direbbe che ho scelto i colori sotto l’effetto dell’LSD, ma ormai lo sapete, mi piace pasticciare coi filati! Più che altro chissà se riuscirò a completarla prima che finisca l’estate...

However,... even from beneath the beach umbrella, and between one sand rissole and another, crocheting can be very convenient : )

I’m preparing a lot of little squares to make a top for my little girl. My husband probably will say that I chosed the colours under LSD effect, but you already know that I love playing with yarns! I wish I finished this before the end of the summer...

Marmorizzazione su glossy/Marbled glossy

La mia zietta preferita fa gli anni a fine giugno, ma non avendola vista che di recente, posto solo ora la foto del pacchetto che le ho preparato, ma soprattutto del biglietto. Mi piace molto usare come chiudipacco degli inserti naturali, come fiori secchi o spighe di riso e orzo.

Althought my favourite auntie’s birthday comes is in June, this year I could meet her only a few days ago. Thus, only now I can show you the picture of the gift I made her, and the card in particular. I love making parcel seals with natural elements, like dry flowers or rise and barley ears.

Anche il bigliettino è floreale, stampato con il tampone Impress sul glossy e acquarellato con pennarelli Impress ed alcool. Anche la scritta di fondo (poesia di Leopardi, Impronte d’Autore) è stampata col tampone Impress. Lo sfondo è ‘mosso’ grazie all’effetto marmorizzato creato usando le ricariche dei colori Impress e del pigmento oro, con dell’alcool denaturato.

The greeting card is floral too. I printed it using Impress pad on glossy paper and I coloured it with Impress markers and alcohol. The stamp I chose on the background is a Leopardi’s poem (Impronte d’Autore), and I used Impress pad to print it too. I made the marble effect on the background with Impress and gold pigment refills with alcohol.

Per i meno esperti: perchè la stampa di fondo non interferisca con la stampa del soggetto principale, basta creare una mascheratura. Ovvero: prima stampate il fiore sul glossy, poi stampate un altro fiore su un post-it, quindi ritagliate quest’ultimo a filo con delle forbici apputite e lo sovrapponete al fiore stampato sul glossy. A quel punto potete stampare lo sfondo in tutta libertà: quando toglierete il fiore di carta, quello su glossy sarà intonso e pronto ad essere colorato a piacere.

For the inexperienced: create a mask to avoid any interference between the background stamp and the main subject. First, print the flower on the paper; then print the same flower on a post-it and cut it using sharp scissors and put it on the flower printed on glossy. At this point, print the background. When you remove the post-it flower, you will see a perfect image ready to be coloured as you like.

Rilegatura/Bookbinding

A gentile richiesta di Jessica, questo post è dedicato alla rilegatura dei diari di viaggio. In realtà è molto semplice, non dovreste avere problemi a realizzarla, ma sono sicura che le immagini saranno più chiare di mille parole. Ho cercato di sintetizzare i vari passaggi anche con dei disegni, spero siano comprensibili.
Come modello ho usato un foglio di carta ripiegato, con un lato più corto dell’altro per mostrare meglio i passaggi di profilo.

As kindly requested by Jessica, here is the tutorial of the bookbinding of the journal. It is really simple and I am sure you all can do it pretty easily. Furthermore, the pictures can help more than a thousand words. I also sketched each step; I hope the drawings will help you.
I chosed a folded sheet of paper as model; its shorter side will offer you a good the chance to follow each step easily.

Il passaggio dal 9 al 10 è il più difficile da spiegare: prima di reinserire il filo nel foro centrale, occorre farlo passare sia al di sotto del filo del passaggio 1 che al di sotto del filo del passaggio 5. Senza questo accorgimento, si rischia di far fare al filo un ‘ritorno’ uguale all’’andata’, e quindi di ritrovarsi nuovamente al passaggio 8.

Steps from 9 to 10 are the hardest to explain: before running the thread through the central hole, you have to reeve it first under step-1-thread and then under step-5-thread. Without this expedient, the thread can enter and exit the paper with grasping it, and you would be back to step 8, then.

Usando un filo lungo, i capi A e B che si ottengono alla fine della rilegatura possono essere usati per legare il quaderno. Viceversa, se invece di partire dall’esterno del quaderno partite dall’interno, potete annodare i fili e tagliarli corti a filo della carta: così ottenete una rilegatura senza ‘strascichi’.

By using a long thread, you can shut the journal softly with the final A and B plies. Otherwise, starting the binding from the inside of the quire, you can even knot the plies closer to the paper surface and cut them short obtaining a trainless binding.

Diario di viaggio/Journal

L’estate è iniziata e il caldo si fa sentire... state già sguazzando al mare? A me è venuta voglia lavorando a questi diari di viaggio, commissionatimi come regalo per dei compagni di crociera.

Summer has arrived! Heat is already here... are you tossed by the waves yet? Well, working at these journals, a recent request for a gift for cruise fellows, made me wish I were on holidays.

Era da un po’ che non mi cimentavo con lavori di legatoria, ma devo dire che utilizzare la carta fili (per la copertina) è stato più soddisfacente del previsto: è una carta rustica, con fibre di tessuto all’interno (da cui il nome), resistente, ma allo stesso tempo sufficientemente morbida da assecondare le pieghe durante la lavorazione.

I haven’t put myself to test with bookbinding since a while, but I must admit that most of the credit for the good result must be given to ‘carta fili’ paper (for the cover): it is a rustic paper added with fabric fibres (its name comes from it). It is resistant and soft at the same time, and this supports splendidly the folding process.

L’interno dei quaderni (in formato quadrato 16x16) è realizzato con il cartoncino coriandoli, composto da cotone, cellulosa e carta riciclata (da cui la puntinatura colorata), perfetto per la scrittura ma anche per sostenere il peso di due foto per pagina. Come sfondo ho stampato su ogni pagina dispari una rosa dei venti usando il colore Memento Desert Sand, così tenue che non interferisce con la scrittura di un testo o l’applicazione di un’immagine.

The internal (16x16 cm) is made by ‘coriandoli’ cardstock, made of cotton, cellulose, and recycled paper (this is why the surface shows lots of coloured dots). It suites writing and it is strong enough to sustain two pictures a page. I printed a wind rose using Memento Desert Sand, a light image that does not divert the reader’s attention from the text or the picture.

La rilegatura invece è realizzata con un cotone grezzo a 3 capi, in colore naturale; ho lasciato i capi più lunghi in modo che potessero girare attorno al quaderno e chiuderlo in maniera morbida.

I made the binding with a 3-plies rustic cotton in natural colour. I kept the plies long enough to run around the quire and shut it softly.

Mi è piaciuto così tanto questo progetto, che ho deciso di realizzare un settimo quaderno da regalare ad un’amica velista. Questa volta però per cambiare ho optato per un formato rettangolare.

I liked it so much that I chose to make an additional journal for a very dear friend of mine, a sailor. To give it a change, this time I opted for a rectangular format.

Sorpresa/Surprise

Lo scorso giovedì, giorno del mio 37° compleanno (argh!), mio marito mi ha davvero sorpresa, regalandomi una nuova macchina fotografica compatta. Non che la mia vecchia macchina (una Canon G5) sia da pensionamento, lavora ancora egregiamente e ne vado molto orgogliosa. Però devo ammettere che da portare in giro per scatti ‘al volo’ (come ad esempio nelle fiere) è piuttosto ingombrante, e il macro non è dei migliori... Evidentemente le mie rimostranze protratte sono andate a buon segno : )
Così per proteggere il nuovo arrivo, ho deciso di cucire una custodia ‘da borsetta’, nonostante le mie doti di sartoria siano praticamente nulle...

Last Tuesday it was my 37th birthday (argh!), and my husband really surprised me with a wonderful present: a new compact camera. My previous camera (a Canon G5) is not ready for the bin yet; actually, it still does a great job and I’m proud of it. But I’ve to admit that there have been occasions when its weight was an issue, and the macro does not suit all my needs... Clearly my continuous grumbles stroke a nerve : )
Thus, despite my poor sartorial dote, I decided to sew a camera holder to protect my new jewel.

Per prima cosa ho tagliato una striscia da un foglio di cellophane e l’ho piegata in 3 parti, in modo da usarla come imbottitura della custodia.

First, I cut a strip of cellophane foil and I folded it in three parts to make the holder padding.

Quindi ho tagliato due strisce di stoffa grandi poco più della striscia di cellophane: l’una per la parte esterna e l’altra per la fodera.

Then, I cut two strips of fabric just slightly bigger than the cellophane strip: one for the external part and one for the lining.

Poi ho fatto un ‘sandwich’ col cellophane e ho bloccato il perimetro di tutti e 3 gli strati con gli spilli.

Then, I made a ‘sandwich’ with cellophane inside and I blocked the three layers with pins.

Passo successivo è stata la cucitura dei lati, ad eccezione di uno corto, che mi è servito per rivoltare il lavoro al dritto.

The next step involved the sewing of the edges, but one short. This I used to turn the work on the right side.

Una volta girato il lavoro, ho cucito anche l’ultimo lato aperto e ho piegato la parte inferiore della striscia per creare la borsina contenitrice per la macchina.
Tocco finale l’applicazione di un laccetto e un bottone per tenerla chiusa. Così non corro alcun rischio di graffiare monitor o obiettivi con tutte le cianfrusaglie sparse nella borsa...

After turning the work, I sewed the last open side and folded the bottom of the strip to create the camera holder.
The final touch was represented by a ribbon and a button that composed the closure mechanism. In this way, there is not chance that the gimcracks that fill in my purse can scratch my new camera’s precious parts...
